On January 12, 1944 Bertha Stephens was born in Norman Park, Georgia to the
proud parentage of Eddie Roy and Leola Payne. After graduating from Cook
County Training School in 1962, she moved to Hampton Virginia. Where she met
her late husband James R. Stephens. She began her career at Hampton General
Hospital in housekeeping and work her way up to transportation where she
retired from in 2005.
During her life she had many passions she enjoyed decorating and home interior.
She was the go-to person for all home design questions.
She relocated back to Georgia in 2009 after she retired, to be with her siblings.
She became a member of Harrel Chapel Baptist Church, in her hometown Lenox,
Ga., where she attended until her health would no longer allow her to.
Bertha cherished her relationships with her loving family and those she
considered friends. It was her desire to see her loved ones excel in life and would
offer input on any projects or jobs that they were working on. She inspired others
to work hard and remain dedicated to their endeavors.
Bertha passed away on May 20,2023 at Colquitt Regional Hospital. She was
proceeded in death by her grandson: Jamal Stephens; brothers: Charlie Payne Sr.
(Mable Payne), Johnnie B. Payne (Marie Helen), Leroy Payne, David Payne
(Barbara sister-in-law); sisters: Maggie Wilson, Elizabeth Payne-White (Eugene S.
White), and Florence Doleman.
She leaves to cherish her memories of her loving Son Devin Stephens.
Stepchildren: Kim Robinson and James Stephens; step-grandchildren: India
Stephens, Isiah Stephens (Dennita Stephens), Eric Winston, and Kanuri Decosta;
brothers: Andrew Payne, Richard Payne-White (Brenda), James Payne (Cathy
Jean); sisters: Mamie Allen (Johnny), Betty Demps (Ennes); and a host of nieces,
nephews and friends.
