Our dear mother, Joyce Lawanna Benjamin, sadly passed away on September 17, 2023, at the age of 75.
Lawanna, as she was affectionately known, was an amazing mother, grandmother, great grandmother,
sister, and friend to many. Mrs. Benjamin was well-known in her community of Hahira, Georgia.
Lawanna Benjamin was born on September 6, 1948, in Lowndes County, Georgia. Lawanna Benjamin
graduated from Westside High School, at the age of 16, in 1965. Mrs. Benjamin had a strong passion for
teaching the youth. Many of you, she probably taught to read, write, and count. Lawanna Benjamin
completed the Early Childhood Development certificate program at ValTech, also known as Wiregrass.
Mrs. Benjamin devoted over 30 years of her life, educating the youth in several capacities. Lawanna
Benjamin worked at the Children’s Ministry Department at New Hope, served as a paraprofessional at
Hahira Elementary, daycare teacher at Happy Faces Daycare in Hahira, Georgia, parent educator with
Coastal Plains and Head Start, and substitute teacher in the Lowndes County School system.
Lawanna Benjamin was a devoted wife to Torrance “Bobby” Benjamin for more than 40 years and a
mother to three amazing sons, Sterling Bryant, Terry Benjamin, and Corey Benjamin. Mrs. Benjamin was
a loyal member of New Hope Baptist Church for 30 years and completed her Christian service at Hahira
Nazarene/Webb-Miller Community Church for more than 40 years, where she served as the Director of
Children’s Ministry, teaching Sunday School.
Lawanna Benjamin was predeceased by her parents, Bessie Pearl and Otis Camion and Willis Turner, her
siblings, Otis Keith Camion, Alberta Turner, Mendell Turner Debro, and Robert Allen Turner, her late
husband, Torrance “Bobby” Benjamin. Lawanna Benjamin is survived by her children Sterling Bryant
(Delisha Bryant), Terry Benjamin, and Corey Benjamin (Lisa Benjamin), Josette Trice, Teresa Benjamin-
Gatlin, and Lawrence Benjamin, her siblings, Latonyna Bryant, Tony Bryant (Ava), Michael
Bryant(Marion), Faye Chachere, Karen Camion, Wilbert Turner, Anna Turner, Diane Turner Neal, Alma
Turner Linder, and Claudia Turner, grandchildren, Sierra Harris (Montavious Harris), Kierra Bryant, Koby
Bryant, Twyia Manning, Tommare Manning, Aiyanna Manning, Terry Benjamin Jr., Jacquia Smith,
Jaborah McEady and Seymond Floyd, 9 great grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, special friends Dinah
Walker and Eleanor Turner Walker and a hosts of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
