Sylvester Garrett was born on September 25, 1938, in Sparks Georgia to the late Mr.
and Mrs. Horace and Carrie Garrett. On January 15, 2025, after a lengthy illness,
Sylvester transitioned from labor to reward quietly and peacefully (where he requested),
in his childhood home under the care of his son and Hospice team.
Sylvester was one of 14 children raised in a loving home and attended the public school
system in Cook County. He left home at the age of 18 to join the United States Army
where Sylvester served a 2-year term.
The ambitious, goal driven young Georgia native, from a small town, relocated to the big
City of Brooklyn New York in hopes of created a successful life for himself. While in
New York, Sylvester was gainfully employed by the United States Postal Service, where
he worked for several years before finding employment with the transit systems of New
York City and retired there, as a Subway Train Operator. During his employment, he
developed a close friend group and maintained many of those friendships well over 40
plus years.
Sylvester was admired by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and
mostly anyone that spent time with him. Affectionately, nicknamed “The Rich Uncle”
merely spoke to who he was in totality. Sylvester was rich in love, kindness, laughter
and encouragement. Always pouring motivation back into the generations beneath
him. Sharing his wisdom, inspiration and love of gift giving.
“Syl” referred to by some close to him, enjoyed spending time with friends, hosting
football game watch parties at his home, Atlantic City trips, fishing & hunting. He was
proud to show you his captured deer or share some of his fresh caught fish. His
infectious laugh and smile will be sorely missed.
Preceding Sylvester in death was his parents Mr. Horace and Mrs. Carrie B. Garrett,
siblings Wille (Thelma) Carrie (Cleve), Lucille, Leroy, Worrest, Ruth, Mattie (Paul), Ida,
Josephine and Ann.
Sylvester leaves to cherish fond memories, his son Christopher Gaskins (Nicole),
grandchildren, Naja, Christopher Jr., Gary and Darrian, great grandchildren, Ariah, Zylo
and Kenneth Jr., sister, JoAnn (Laymon), Juanita and Wilma (John), along with a host of
nieces, nephews and family with which he shared a special bond and many cherished friends.
